Training the Medical Community

ZVMS Street Medicine trains the medical community to deliver high quality, compassionate healthcare outside of a clinical setting through:

Street Medicine Selective

The Street Medicine selective is a 20-hour optional elective at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine (MCASOM). Medical students, local partners from agencies serving people experiencing homelessness in Olmsted County, and people with lived experience explore ways to address unmet health needs.

Content Added to Science of Health Care Delivery Coursework

Beginning in July 2022, all 1st-year MCASOM medical students participate in two-hours of Street Medicine content as part of their required Science of Health Care Delivery coursework.

Street Medicine Longitudinal Selective

In August 2021, ZVMS launched a new educational and service opportunity for Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine (MCASOM) medical students to learn to bring health care out of the clinical setting and to underserved populations.

In the Street Medicine longitudinal selective, medical students, local partners from agencies serving people experiencing homelessness in Olmsted County, and people with lived experience explore ways to address unmet health needs.

The fourth year of the selective kicked off on August 14, 2024, with an orientation at the Rochester Community Warming Center

The Street Medicine selective was inspired by the April 26, 2021 presentation to the Rochester community by
James Withers, MD, the founder of the Street Medicine Institute

The Street Medicine program built on ZVMS’ training series on serving patients experiencing homelessness.

Street Medicine Content Added to Medical School Curriculum

All 1st-year medical students at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine (Rochester campus) participate in two hours of Street Medicine content as part of their required Science of Healthcare Delivery course.

Half of the 1st-year class meet at a time to allow for a more intimate atmosphere at the Rochester Community Warming Center. Students learn from panelists with direct experience of homelessness about the importance of building trust and overcomimg stereotypes and stigma.

Sources for Data on People Experiencing Homelessness in Olmsted County

As we learned from helping with the 2022 Point in Time (PIT) Count, the exact numbers of people experiencing homelessness in our community can be difficult to obtain. We count who we can identify.

Here are two websites to consult for numbers and demographics:

River Valleys CoC (Continuum of Care)

and

Wilder Foundation
